Don Emde at Radnor Hunt

Sunday, September 9, 2012.

Our special motorcycle guest this year is Don Emde, AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame member and several- time AMA Champion.

This summer, Don is retracing the journey of Cannonball Baker from San Diego to New York, and will be stopping at Radnor Hunt Concours d'Elegance before he begins his final eastward leg of the journey.

Don is a published author and will do a book signing of "The Daytona 200, the History of America's Most Famous Motorcycle Race." Don has also donated a copy for the Radnor Hunt Concours d'Elegance silent auction which takes place on Saturday.

In addition to our featured marque of Henderson motorcycles, we are also featuring two-stroke racing bikes. Don's victory at the Daytona 200 on his TR3 Yamaha 350cc, against the bigger Honda, Kawasaki, Honda, and Ducati, launched the two-stroke revolution in earnest in the USA. Don's victory in 1972 at Daytona was the first of twelve straight years of Yamaha domination, although those were on the legendary TZ750, making Don's win all the more impressive. It was a classic case "Giant Killer" victory. His winning Yamaha is featured in this month's American Motorcyclist magazine and is on permanent display at the AMA Museum in Ohio.

Racing two-stroke motorcycles will be featured, and a wide variety of these factory production racers will be on display. The collection will include a 1932 DKW 250cc. It's a water-cooled, supercharged two- stroke roadster. We'll have " the earliest known, most complete and correct 1962 Cotton Telstar 250cc production racer" according to Bob Smith of the UK-based Cotton Owners Club. A stunning collection of Yamaha TZ series "over the counter" racers; the TZ125, TZ350 and TZ750, aka "The Beast", will also be on display at the 16th Annual Radnor Hunt Concours d'Elegance.

One of the gems of the two-stroke collection is the ex-Gina Bovaird Suzuki RG500 two-stroke 500cc from the French Grand Prix in 1982. Gina is the only woman to have ever qualified for a 500cc GP race, but she was injured in the practice session and could not compete in the race.

Nomination is now open for all motorcycle categories: Henderson (or other American four cylinder machines), two-stroke racing machines, vintage scooter (pre-1985). Please use the nomination form found using the link below on the page or on the Tickets and Registration Forms page.
